|BALCONY URGES CONGRESS TO SUPPORT |
$60 BILLION SANDY AID PACKAGE
December 14, 2012
BALCONY, The Business and Labor Coalition of New York, today (Friday) urged Congress to PASS the emergency $60 billion Sandy assistance legislation for recovering and rebuilding from the devastating hurricane.
"It is imperative that Congress quickly provide the necessary funds for our communities to help rebuild homes, hospitals, roads, infrastructure, and utilities still impacted by Hurricane Sandy," BALCONY co-chairs Alan Lubin, Catherine Abate and Robert Hayes said.
"We support Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senator Charles Schumer, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the New York Congressional delegation, NYS AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento, and our BALCONY union leaders Mike Mulgrew and Dick Iannuzzi in the effort to win this crisis funding for the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut regions."
"Just as New Yorkers supported the rebuilding of New Orleans after Katrina, so too do we ask the help of our friends around the United States for their help with rebuilding New York."
Last week at the BALCONY Breakfast Forum
, NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli
put the cost of Hurricane Sandy more than $42 billion to the New York economy, while NYC Comptroller John Liu
said Sandy is costing more than $200 million a day.
"The comptrollers brought home the stark reality that Hurricane Sandy not only created a horrific human toll in terms of lives lost and devastation of homes, but that the economic cost to our region is overwhelming and we need help from the federal government," Lubin said.
"Thousands of New York Small Businesses were devastated by Hurricane Sandy and they need help from the Federal Government," stated Mark Jaffe, President of the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce and key a BALCONY member." The sooner we can provide real relief to these small businesses the better. Now is not the time for partisan political delays. Like Governor Cuomo, we urge Congress to act and help our region now!"
